Microsoft Introduced Skype 5.8 for Windows Microsoft Introduced Skype 5.8 for WindowsMicrosoft Introduced Skype 5.8 for Windows

5 February 2012

Microsoft has recently announced that the company had released an update to the Windows version of Skype, Skype 5.8 that brings new video calling and social media capabilities to the popular VoIP client while fixing some minor bugs.
The new Skype 5.8.0.154 provides support for HD video calling, push-to-talk hotkeys, group screen sharing, and a beta version of software that empowers users to place audio and video calls via Facebook to non-Skype users.
For full HD calling users will need Logitech’s C920 webcam that supports HD video encoding internally. One more requirement is an upload/download speed of at least 2 Mbps.
Group screen sharing allows users sharing an application window with conference call participants.
Enhanced Facebook video and voice calling allows users to initiate a video call with a Facebook friend by selecting a name and clicking “video call.” This feature “works with Facebook friends who are not Skype users.”
Additionally, the latest update fixes some minor bugs, such as a glitch that can prevent the display of call duration when Skype is running in compact mode; a flaw where proxy settings in the Skype client were not disabled when proxy was set using registry keys; and an error that prevented users from adding a phone number to a group that belonged to a Facebook contact.
