One Million Acts of Green Campaign Encourages us All to Reduce Our Impact on the Environment

Irvine, Calif. – April 29, 2009 -- Cisco today announced the One Million Acts of Green Campaign aimed at tapping into the power of the human network to mitigate the effects of climate change. Cisco’s vision is for information technology to transform how the world manages its environmental and energy challenges. Cisco believes the intelligent, connected network can be a catalyst for environmental sustainability and innovation that will help us work, play, and live in a more environmentally-responsible way.

Cisco also announced updates to its campaign to help reduce the impact of its Linksys by Cisco products on the environment. Since launching its greener initiatives on Linksys by Cisco products in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand, the Company has sought to lessen its environmental footprint through more environmentally sensitive packaging materials, modes of product transport, together with improved environmental efficiencies at its factories.
Facts/Highlights:

One Million Acts of Green:

* Cisco is launching for the U.S. the One Million Acts of Green campaign which asks schools, cities, businesses, politicians, and celebrities and individuals to perform acts of green to help save greenhouse gas emissions.
* Green acts can be small: install a low-flow showerhead. Take public transportation instead of driving. Use a refillable coffee cup. Or something bigger, such as covering your roof in solar panels.
* One Million Acts of Green asks you to form a community, record your acts of green, and share your ideas to encourage others. It shows the power of people coming together and working toward meaningful goals—the power of the human network.
* Start at the One Million Acts of Green website and register your acts of green. The calculator shows you your positive impact.

Linksys by Cisco Products:

* Packaging and Energy Star

Nearly 100 products are shipping in packaging that includes 80% recycled content, printed with vegetable-based inks. From June 2008 through February 2009, more than 3 million Linksys by Cisco products with Energy Star rated power supplies were shipped in the United States, and there are currently 39 Linksys by Cisco router models listed on the Energy Star website.
* Product Transport

Since 2006, the percentage of products shipped on airplanes has decreased from 30% to 2% currently; making the percentage of products shipped on boats now 98%. According to the GHG Protocol (www.ghgprotocol.org), greenhouse gas emissions equal 1.83 lb./Ton per mile for air transport, while marine ship emissions are 0.03 lb./Ton per mile. This has resulted in drastically-reduced total carbon emissions for our product transport, from 40,590 tons in 2006 to 8,665 in 2008.
* Factory Standards

The Consumer Business Group now holds its suppliers to higher environmental efforts to sustainability in manufacturing, product design, and corporate responsibility including: separation of recycled and non-recycled materials, ‘6S’activities (Sorting, systematic organization, shine (identify defects), standardize, sustain, safety) for energy savings and reduced waste, and lead-free development of certain components.
