 Internet2 Cooperates with Ciena for Enhancement of Its National Network

Internet2 cooperates with Ciena to improve company’s national backbone network of 100 Gbps capabilities to support company’s US Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN) project.
The project has been funded by a federal stimulus grant received from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration's Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP). So, Ciena will assist Internet2 to raise company’s network's bandwidth from 100 Gbps to 8.8 Tbps with the purpose to connect more than 200 000 community major institutions.
Ciena will provide its ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with WaveLogic optical processors for the new network that aims to build a new national backbone scalable to 88 waves of 100G.
The main purpose of UCAN project is to assist community institutions like libraries, K-12 schools, community colleges, hospitals, health centers and public safety organizations with next-generation Internet-based apps through Internet2 Network.
