Cisco proudly proclaims about its contributions to the Linux kernel. But indeed it could be much more expected from such a company.
Google gave a nice lead for all market with its open sourced contributions with its core intellectual property. The important point is that Google doesn't open source its secret "code" – precious algorithms… Cisco could follow Google with driving huge contributions and innovation in the areas that surround networking. And, Cisco doesn't need to open primary intellectual property.
Could Cisco contribution to Linux be effective? Probable its involvement will bring benefits.
Open source is the next iteration of open standards. And open standard is the foundation upon which Cisco became a business giant. There is an enormous opportunity for Cisco to compete with Google about contributions in the open source networking world.
