CounterPath Introduced New Android VoIP Application CounterPath Introduced New Android VoIP ApplicationCounterPath Introduced New Android VoIP Application

21 September 2010

VoIP software provider CounterPath introduced the first “commercial-grade" VoIP application for the open-source Android mobile operating system. Official launching of the application will be held in October.

CounterPath deals with vendors, like Metaswitch, offering converged fixed-mobile applications directed to “enabling specific, tightly coupled client/server features that will offer operators and ITSPs solutions for voice, IM/Presence and video all synchronized between the desktop and mobile devices."

The new application from CounterPath is not the first VoIP application for Android devices; Dublin-based Cicero Networks, for example, about two weeks ago introduced a version of its VoIP client, CiceroPhone, for Android.

CounterPath released a Bria for iPhone edition in June. The mobile VoIP app is suitable for iPhones, iPads, and version 2.0 of the iPod Touch. It supports calls over 3G and Wi-Fi networks. The new application is fully SIP-compliant, meaning it will work with any SIP-compliant server even with equipment from major vendors like Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, BroadSoft, Metaswitch, Avaya, and Cisco. It will also be suitable for Asterisk PBXs.
