20 July 2009

JSI Capital Advisors has unveiled Phone Lines 2009, its summary of incumbent local exchange carriers. The company states that ILECs are ranked by access lines, access lines by state, and by parent company.

The first Phone Lines summary was published in 2001 and since then, it’s being used by people who follow the ILEC industry. The summaries provide a detailed analysis of trends in access lines and take-rates for alternative voice service providers. The company also provides a comparison of statistics with indicated penetration trends for the overall U.S. population and households over time.

Phone Lines 2009 has been expanded to include JSICA's first-ever, 10-year forecast of access line counts and voice industry market shares for the next decade. Phone Lines 2009 provides projections for ILEC access lines and facilities-based competitive local exchange carrier access up to 2018. It also provides listing of the nation's nearly 1,200 ILECs.

“We incorporated data from the Federal Communications Commission, the U.S. Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Cable Television Association, the Cellular Telephone Industry Association, as well as our own comprehensive database of statistics for the ILEC and wireless industries,” Richelle Elberg, director and senior analyst of JSICA said, in a statement. “We've attacked the process from every angle possible in order to ensure the most reasonable final assumptions possible.”

Phone Lines 2009 offers extensive analysis and research regarding ILEC access line trends. It consists of information compiled from Public Utility Commission and Federal Communications Commission reports, Securities and Exchange Commission filings, analyst reports, press releases, Web pages, and other publicly available sources.

Another report by Arbitron claimed that compiled population estimates for cell-phone-only “CPO” households in U.S. vary from as high as 38 percent in Bryan-College Station, Texas to as low as 5 percent in Hamptons-Riverhead. To facilitate measurement of people who have "cut the cord" and cannot be reached by landline, Arbitron introduced CPO sampling in 151 diary markets with its spring 2009 survey.
