23 July 2011

The Hindu Business Line has reported that BSNL had collaborated with Sai Infosystems India, IT solutions provider, in order to introduce voice and video features within company’s broadband service.
As expected, the service will provide video telephony, audio calls and HD quality audio calls to International PSTN/ mobile numbers.
The report stated that the services will be launched in Ahmedabad and will become available in other parts of Gujarat at the end of this month, later the service will be rolled out in Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
Currently the company offers a promotional tariff.
The activation of the service includes a registration fee of Rs 100. A monthly fee is of Rs 150 that includes Rs 100 per month (service charge and VPN charges) and Rs 50 for a static IP. Domestic audio calls will be charged at 0.40 paise per minute, and domestic video calls will be charged at Rs 2 per minute.
BSNL is not the only telecoms company to offer VoIP services in India: MTNL and Tata Communications also provide Internet Telephony.
Here is the question: Why users should pay per minute if they have an option to video chat via IM’s with assistance of Skype, Gtalk, and Google+ and other.
As for international calling, BSNL provides only non video calls.
