| |
8 August 2011
About half the workers of Verizon Communications were participating on strike on Sunday because negotiations concerning a new labor contract failed.
45,000 workers took part in the strike and it is the first walk-out that Verizon, the leading US telephone network operator, faced since 2000.
Verizon and The Communications Workers of America as well as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers held negotiations since late June but the agreement was not reached till the contract expired Saturday night.
Company’s technicians and customer support employees participated in the strike.
According to Verizon and the CWA, the sides were not able to agree on work rules, healthcare contributions, and pension plans.
The company has 93,000 workers in wireline business, and 58,000 are unionized. If to keep in mind Verizon Wireless venture with Vodafone Group Plc, the company's workforce in total is 196,000 employees.
