MVNO Is Ready to Set up Wireless Broadband Network
| |
5 September 2011
The DoT (Department of Telecommunications) is in process of considering the introduction of a MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) model in order to set up a wireless broadband network across rural areas.
The USOF division requested the licensing branch of the department to check the MVNO model for setting up the broadband network and issue a decision.
The project should be funded through DoT's universal service obligation (USO) fund.
With the MVNO model, operators will be able provide services through spectrum/infrastructure of other telecom service providers.
MVNO does not own network, but has commercial arrangements with other telecom services providers. At present time, under the government policy MVNOs are not allowed.
The TRA of India had given recommendations on allowing MVNOs; since then, the DoT is still in process on the guidelines for MVNO.
