Messagenet Challenges Microsoft/Skype Agreement
| |
4 October 2011
The Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype for $8.5 billion is on its way through US regulatory scrutiny but there a new voice emerges in the European Union.
Messagenet, an Italian VoIP company, has sent tothe European Commission a written warning that in case if Microsoft is allowed to purchase Skype, it will enhance Skype’s leading position in the VoIP calling market, stranding some other VoIP companies from the market.
Messagenet has proposed a solution: to allow Microsoft acquire Skype, but not to permit Microsoft to bundle Skype software with Microsoft’s Windows OS and require Skype to offer VoIP services that would be interoperable with other Internet phone providers.
Microsoft has not answered the challenge, but a spokesperson commented that Microsoft and Skype conduct “business as usual”.
It is expected that the European Commission will announce its decision on Microsoft-Skype acquisition this week.
