The EU Approved Microsoft-Skype Acquisition The EU Approved Microsoft-Skype AcquisitionThe EU Approved Microsoft-Skype Acquisition

10 October 2011

The European Union has finally granted the approval of Microsoft's acquisition of Skype, a VoIP specialist, for $8.5 billion.
The European Commission commented that it didn’t have any considerable antitrust concerns over the acquisition that first was announced in May.
The European Commission’s representatives said that "the commission considers that there are no competition concerns in this growing market where numerous players, including Google, are present."
With this approval, the proposed acquisition now can become finalized. The US Federal Trade Commission approved the acquisition earlier this summer.
According to the EU, the commission does not consider the acquisition to bring any threat to current enterprise communications vendors like Cisco.
Once completed, the acquisition will make Microsoft the 2nd company to purchase Skype in its lifetime. In 2005 eBay purchased Skype for $2.6 billion to offload the company four years later in a spin-off agreement.
