13 October 2011

Internet2 and Energy Sciences Network (ESNet) from the US Department of Energy (DOE) have announced that they had put the finishing touches on transcontinental 100G network.
This new 8.8 Tbps network has 100 Gbps optical backbone connections; it benefits from the coherent optical technology of Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform.
To the present time, Internet2 and ESNet have built connections operational across eight markets: New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Denver, Kansas City, Salt Lake City and Sunnyvale.
The two companies serve different clientele; the major reason to upgrade networks to 100G is the continuous growth in scientific research traffic.
Internet2's network will provide support to other community institutions such as libraries, community colleges, K-12 schools, hospitals and public safety organizations through company’s US Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN) project.
ESnet represents a national network that connects the DOE Office of Science researchers and links them to other research partners worldwide.
