Skype Allows Hackers Tracking BitTorrent Downloads Skype Allows Hackers Tracking BitTorrent DownloadsSkype Allows Hackers Tracking BitTorrent Downloads

23 October 2011

Scientists have offered a stealthy way for tracking the IP addresses of numerous Skype users, and link the information to online activities like sharing specific files over BitTorrent.
The method was explained in detailed way in a recently published academic paper; it works when Skype users accept calls only from contacts and even those users who aren't logged in, as long as they have used the VoIP program in the previous three days.
The system can link an individual Skype user to the BitTorrent activity, even in case they share the IP address over a local area network deploying NAT (network address translation).
According to scientists, Google Talk, MSN Live and other apps may be successful with this technique, but Skype was chosen for containing what was called “a major privacy vulnerability.”
The research paper titled “I Know Where You are and What You are Sharing” offered several recommendations for enhancing Skype's ability to keep close the identity of its users.
