9 November 2011

Vodafone, a telecom giant, is building off a pilot program in the West Berkshire village of East Garston. The company plans to deploy 12 new trials of community-wide femtocells from 2012.
In partnership with Alcatel-Lucent, Vodfone intends to bring Vodafone Sure Signal femtocell in order to increase 3G signals across rural areas, where 2G signals reach only 66% of the entire country; 3G signals are applicable to 13% of the British population.
These trials will offer a new opportunity for Vodafone and Alcatel-Lucent to experiment with femtocell technology as well as with other forms of rural broadband projects.
The government has provided 150 million to support the trials and to extend mobile coverage to communities vexed by insufficient mobile coverage.
Sure Signal from Vodafone represents an affordable solution that transforms the mobile phone signal within a structure. It is compatible only with Vodafone handsets.
Moreover, Vodafone is also collaborating with BT in East Garston in order to install the femtocells in phone boxes to be placed on BT Openreach’s telephone poles and in public areas.
