12 November 2011

The Ministry of Information Technology and Communications (MTIC) of Colombia has announced that it had selected Union Temporal Fibra Optica Colombia, the joint venture between Total Play and TV Azteca, a contract to build the countrywide fiber network.
As expected the build out process will take about 30 months to complete. The 15,000-km Vive Digital network will connect 1,078 municipalities.
According to officials, this network is expected to “connect all the departmental capitals and provide Internet access to public schools, hospitals and government buildings.”
The Colombian government will share expenses with privately-owned service providers.
The government intends to increase Internet connections from 2.2 million up to 8.8 million by 2014; it is going to invest USD 216.6 million in this project.
