Truphone iPhone Upgrade Focuses on Quality Truphone iPhone Upgrade Focuses on QualityTruphone iPhone Upgrade Focuses on Quality

The race to develop mobile VoIP applications is proceeding at breakneck speed, especially when it comes to the iPhone. While a big part of the contest involves adding feature upon feature, it's hard to get things right when the process is so hurried. Truphone has thus decided to focus on quality rather than quantity for now. Accordingly, its new Truphone 3.0 for iPhone makes several big advances on the user experience front.

Truphone has had an iPhone mobile VoIP app since mid-2008. Earlier versions relied on a mobile Web interface that users accessed through the iPhone's built-in browser. The application provided instant messaging via wifi links to most major IM services, including AIM, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, Skype and Yahoo! Messenger. It allowed free VoIP calls to Google Talk, Skype and other Truphone users. And it provided cheap international calling via Truphone's VoIP network, making the wireless connection to the handset via either wifi or cellular voice links.

A Web-based interface is not the most efficient approach for such applications, however. For one thing, wireless delay can make the process of composing instant messages sluggish. Thus version 3.0 puts the IM application on the handset, transmitting the full message over the air after it is completed. The application provides access to the various services through an integrated interface, combining contacts from all of them into a single list.

The new version also makes major improvements in voice quality. VoIP applications on the iPhone can run into problems with echo, according to Karl Good, Truphone technical director. The problem is that the device's glass screen transmits vibrations from the earpiece down to the microphone. The iPhone has its own echo-suppression technology embedded in hardware to make cellular calls sound better, Good said. But because Truphone does all of its VoIP processing in software, it needed its own echo-suppression engine. And rather than buying a commercial product from someone like Global IP Solutions, it developed its own. "It's working rather well," Good stated.

The third big improvement in version 3.0 is increased access to account information and management functions. Users can check their balances and other data via the iPhone, without having to go to a PC. They can see their call histories, including both paid and free calls they have made during the month. They can also view the total cost of paid calls in the month, including the cost of individual calls as soon as they're completed.
