20 February 2012

FairPoint communications has recently announced that the Vermont Public Service Board had approved a plan that would see FairPoint Communications investing around $7 million to extend company’s broadband network and offer high-speed Internet to "last-mile" Vermonters.
The Vermont Department of Public Service joined FairPoint Communications in its request; the VDPC agreed “that investing past penalty assessments for broadband buildout helps achieve the state's goal to bring high-speed Internet service to all Vermonters.”
The approval allows FairPoint Communications redirecting past penalties from 2008, 2009 and 2010 and putting them to a much better use.
Since 2008, the company has invested around $80 million and added 1,100 miles of new fiber in Vermont. Almost 90% of FairPoint Communications’ customers in Vermont have high-speed access.
The company will work with the Department of Public Service and Vermont Telecoms Authority to choose areas for expansion from the state's communities. The projects are scheduled to be completed in 2013.
