Cisco Asks EU to Reconsider Skype-Microsoft Deal | |
20 February 2012
Cisco is appealing to a European court to reconsider the EU's approval of Microsoft's $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype, in order to have regulators force the VoIP provider to use products such as Cisco's videoconferencing offerings.
Cisco representatives commented on the situation, "Imagine how difficult it would be if you were limited to calling people who only use the same carrier or if your phone could only call certain brands and not others. Cisco wants to avoid this future for video communications."
The company appealed the European Commission's approval of the Microsoft-Skype deal to the General Court of the European Union. As Cisco officials said, Messagenet, a European VoIP service provider, has also joined in the appeal.
The company intends to have Skype unbundled from Windows and “to open up Skype's Internet phone network to competitors' services by having Microsoft publish Skype's computer coding to allow services to interconnect.”
