The official Google Voice application for the iPhone is finally live in the iTunes App Store. The app was first submitted by Google for its call and texting service more than a year ago. The long time has been taken for intense controversy considering reports surrounding the first application.
Industry reports stated that Apple rejected the app soon after Google submitted it, claiming that is duplicated a core iPhone function. That rejection was enough to launch an investigation by the FCC. AT&T was fingered in the controversy; accused of urging Apple to reject the app. AT&T has denied such allegations.
For its part, Apple has claimed the app was still under review. Google accused Apple of lying about its intentions with the app when questioned directly. Regardless of the true story, the app is now finally here.
In other Google/Apple news, the two companies have been in talks with BOKU over the potential of an acquisition, or at least a wide-reaching partnership.
Google has announced it is cooperating with more than 70 retailers to provide product-search services to shoppers looking for the right gift. This effort will help shoppers determine whether the gift they need is in stock at a nearby store. Google retail partners include national brands like Best Buy and Williams-Sonoma. To provide this service, the retailers have agreed to allow Google to search their inventory for items.
