Ookla’s latest Net Index Household Broadband Quality results puts South Africa on par with rest of the world.
Ookla is famous thanks to its Speedtest.net broadband speed test servers, and in May this year introduced Net Index, a site created to foster public research, analysis and discussion of broadband penetration and performance.
One of the values measured by Net Index is the Household Broadband Quality Index which is based on recent test results from Pingtest.net. “This index compares and ranks consumer broadband quality around the globe,” Ookla explains.
“The value is the rolling mean R Factor over the past 30 days where the mean distance between the client and the server is less than 300 miles.”
The R-factor is an indication of the quality of VoIP calls on a network, and is calculated using various metrics including latency, jitter and packet loss.
The R-factor has a typical range of 50-100 where a higher score indicates a better VoIP call environment. An R-Factor of between 80 and 94 is considered desirable while values of between 70 and 80 are acceptable.
The average household quality index - hence the average R-factor - is 80.87. Ukraine ranked first with a value of 85.88, followed by Netherlands with 85.12 and Russia with 84.75.
