How to Modernize Your Phone System How to Modernize Your Phone SystemHow to Modernize Your Phone System

22 May 2013

Many businesses are now transitioning to a VoIP phone system to save money. However, getting rid of an old legacy PBX might seem like a waste to some. Thankfully, there is a way to transform your old legacy PBX into an IP PBX system. With the proper adapter, you can turn your PBX into an IP PBX.

Step 1: Internet
Your first step is to figure out if your Internet connection can support an IP PBX. Since VoIP calls require bandwidth and a fairly fast Internet speed, you’ll need to make sure your Internet speed is high enough to allow seamless VoIP calls. Once you have verified that your Internet connection can support an IP PBX, you’re ready to move on.

Step 2: Session Border Controller
A session border controller is simply a device which acts as a firewall in your VoIP system. This element is required to transform your PBX into an IP PBX. VoIP providers often sell such devices.

Step 3: VoIP provider
After steps 1 and 2, your IP PBX will be operational. However, with no access to any VoIP networks, you can only make calls to other extensions in your own building. You will need an IP telephony provider to actually make VoIP calls with your IP PBX. Acquiring a VoIP plan is just like acquiring a normal telephony plan but with added benefits. Browse around and find a VoIP provider that is to your liking.

Step 4: VoIP devices
With your IP PBX and your VoIP provider, the only thing you still need is an IP phone. These are easy to find, and many providers will also sell or offer IP phones on their website.

And there you have it: your own IP PBX.
