D-Link Lends Network Performance to UC Irvine for Breakthrough Hiperwall Video Wall Display
| |
10 June 2009
By Integrating D-LinkĀ® Network Equipment, HD Monitors Can Effortlessly Handle Demanding Mix of Broadcast Traffic Without Interruption
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Jun 10, 2009 - Hiperwall is a mammoth video display - a dazzling wall built of numerous high-definition monitors, each with its own imbedded computer for displaying standard and large (up to one gigabyte or larger) graphic images, high-definition (HD) digital movies, and streaming content from video cameras and other live feeds.
The key breakthrough of the Hiperwall system is a distributed software architecture that overcomes the performance limitations typically associated with the display of large or numerous items on multiple display devices. The result is a high-performance, high-resolution visualization system that provides high scalability without requiring the need for any specialized hardware infrastructure. This creates multiple technical and business advantages, such as customized manipulation of the content on the screen.
When readying the impressive display for customer demonstrations at Hiperwall company headquarters, located in a lab on the UC Irvine campus, CEO Jeff Greenberg and his team ran into a snag. They needed to seamlessly stream various types of content - including unicast, multicast and broadcast formats - to the display, but were experiencing 'flooding' because the existing switch and router equipment could not efficiently handle the content flow.
"It wasn't working exactly as we hoped because the equipment could not handle the combination of data types displayed on the wall," said Greenberg. "We needed a solution that could handle the traffic without sacrificing performance."
"We were having problems accessing the Internet through our gateway and receiving DHCP services from our router," Greenberg said. "Our existing network infrastructure could not handle the traffic and we ended up with intermittent access to critical network resources."
Greenberg decided to switch to D-LinkĀ® networking equipment because of a previous relationship between D-Link and UCI. His team installed D-Link Managed 48-Port Gigabit Stackable Switching and D-Link Gigabit Routing, after which D-Link engineers visited the site, made some standard changes to the switch configuration and installed a firmware upgrade.
"The D-Link equipment delivered all of the performance we hoped for, giving our network the ability to effortlessly handle our demanding mix of unicast, multicast and broadcast traffic, while delivering uninterrupted access to all of our network resources," Greenberg said.
With the D-Link equipment Greenberg now can confidently demonstrate Hiperwall's cutting edge capabilities to potential customers, including resizing and relocating each content object anywhere on the video wall, within a single monitor or across multiple monitors. Hiperwall also provides advanced capabilities like zoom, rotation, shading and transparency, enabling users to examine content with increased flexibility and effectiveness.
"With this switch/router combination in place, now we can do everything we set out to do," he added. "It solved all our problems."
