23 July 2009

SEOUL - LG-Nortel, a joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel* [OTC: NRTLQ], has unveiled the world's first residential multimedia terminal based on the Androidâ„¢ platform, which will allow users to enjoy customized phone services, broadband capabilities and innovative new applications in their homes.

Android is an open-sourced application platform designed by the Open Handset Allianceâ„¢ to support applications for smartphones from a range of manufacturers. With the release of the LG-Nortel Multimedia Phone, LG-Nortel brings Android into the residential market, and provides easy access to game, personal productivity, education, cooking, multimedia, videoconferencing, and other applications delivered directly by a telecommunications carrier to the unit's built-in, 3.5-inch TFT LCD screen.

Broad support for Android across the software development community will help ensure the LG-Nortel Multimedia Phone will be tied to the ongoing innovation currently driving the smartphone market, such as new social-network and location-based services that enable a broad range of new capabilities that combine the best of the Web with personal user preferences.

"The pace of innovation in the smartphone market has become breathtaking, and Android is helping push the boundaries of what a personal communications device can do," said JD An, vice president, LG-Nortel. "By building the world's first residential terminal based on s Android operating system, we can help customers tap into a new world of personalized, engaging and entertaining applications from their homes - while helping telecommunications carriers deliver a unified communications experience to subscribers across both the wireless and wired domains. The LG-Nortel Multimedia Phone is nothing short of a revolution in home communications."

The LG-Nortel Multimedia Phone joins LG-Nortel's family of innovative, multimedia terminals, which have already enjoyed a warm reception from carriers including Korea Telecom, Telio and others. All have deployed LG-Nortel terminals to their customers to provide a rich, flexible, and easy-to-use interactive communications experience that brings Internet information services into the home in a timely and relevant way.
