Nortel Adds Enhancements to Industry-Leading Carrier VoIP Portfolio Nortel Adds Enhancements to Industry-Leading Carrier VoIP PortfolioNortel Adds Enhancements to Industry-Leading Carrier VoIP Portfolio

29 July 2009

TORONTO -Nortel* [OTC: NRTLQ] announced significant product enhancements to its carrier voice and multimedia product offerings that will allow service providers to increase network capacity, upgrade their networks more quickly and also improve the communication experience for residential and business subscribers.

These new enhancements, which are expected to be available in the third quarter of 2009, include the latest software releases of the Nortel's Communication Server (CS) 2000 softswitch (Rel CVM13) and Nortel's Adaptive Application Server SIP software engine (Rel A2E 7.0 SP1).

"Nortel is committed to its CVAS R&D and innovation as evident in these new product enhancements that offer more than 100 new end user features and give carriers more flexibility and capacity," said Samih Elhage, president, Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions, Nortel. "We're leveraging our industry leadership in VoIP, multimedia and communications-enabled applications to unleash a more robust communications experience for subscribers that also provide new revenue opportunities for carriers as well as reduce operations costs."

These product enhancements reflect consumer subscriber demands based on a recent Carrier Communications Application Market Study commissioned by Nortel and conducted by Harris Interactive®. For the study Harris surveyed 2,400 people in nine countries (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, Taiwan and South Korea) between December 2008 and January 2009.

"Nortel's latest CVAS portfolio enhancements increase the company's competitive standing in the hosted multimedia sector of the market," said Joe McGarvey, principal analyst, IP Services Infrastructure, Current Analysis. "Nortel's deep carrier VoIP and telephony expertise and progressive approach to providing rich IP communications, collaboration and conferencing applications can help carriers unlock untapped revenues and improve subscriber retention."

New core features introduced in Nortel's CS 2000 IP Multimedia softswitch provide a 66 percent increase in core VoIP capacity while drastically improving software upgrade times by 70 percent over prior releases. Core enhancements to Nortel's Adaptive Application Engine SIP server provide up to a 280 percent increase in SIP lines capacity.

Nortel is offering the industry's first implementation of a SIP application server engine that can be deployed simultaneously or independently in any of three scenarios: as a stand-alone SIP Application Server, as a 3GPP IMS-compliant application server or as an upgrade for carrier customers who have already deployed Nortel's CS 2000.

Nortel's new product enhancements include more than 100 new end user features. Highlights include:

*
A new Personal Agent web-based portal that lets subscribers view and access their call logs, address book and use click-to-call features from any web browser in a more intuitive manner as well as enabling carriers to create custom widgets into their existing end-user web portals.
*
An enhanced Personal Communicator PC client that offers a modern highly intuitive user interface, supports federated instant messaging to Yahoo, AOL, MSN and Google and allows subscribers to manage multiple calls from a single window.
*
Open Programmability Interfaces that allow subscribers to communication-enable web applications. For example, a subscriber could communication-enable their home or business security service by programming it to call their mobile phone and play a pre-recorded announcement (i.e., "your back door is open") if an intruder trips the security alarm.
*
SIP Business Trunking enhancements to include support of all existing widely deployed PRI trunking capabilities via SIP as well as support of the existing draft version of Standards SIP Connect 1.1. All of these capabilities make it easier and more cost-effective for businesses to migrate their legacy PBX trunking services to SIP.
*
New features on Nortel's Mobile Extension application include a "call grabber" feature that lets users switch their calls between their mobile and fixed phone while maintaining the user's presence status and without call interruption. A new "secretary" feature allows a secretary/administrative assistant to handle a manager's calls and see the manager's presence/availability via a PC client.
*
New Advanced SIP line business features includes Uniform Call Distribution , which allows carriers to offer a cost effective customer service/call center solution for their small and medium-sized business subscribers.

Nortel continues to innovate in business and voice solutions as well as class 5 and transit and Multimedia Interconnect solutions. Nortel expects to introduce the next release of CS 2000 and Adaptive Application Engine, CVM14 and A2E 8.0 respectively, in the first half of 2010. Earlier this month, Nortel introduced new upgrades to its CS 1500 solution.

Recently published reports from Dell'Oro Group and Infonetics Research ranked Nortel as the worldwide leader with the largest revenues in the carrier softswitch market for the first quarter of 2009. Nortel has shipped more than 110 million Carrier VoIP and Multimedia ports to more than 340 wireline and wireless carriers globally. In addition, Nortel provides VoIP solutions to two thirds of IDC's worldwide listing of top 20 carriers (by revenue).
