VoIP is one of the fastest and easiest ways for doing worldwide business and staying connected with people around the world; no wonder it is extremely popular nowadays.
Meantime, despite the fact that a large number of people use VoIP services, few really know the essential information on VoIP security, VoIP risks, etc.
As we know it, VoIP is an internet-based connection, which is suspected to the same kinds of attacks such as viruses, identity theft, spam, spyware, phishing as your email and web.

VoIP security both depends on the security of your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and VoIP server. It’s highly important to be aware of several tips on VoIP vulnerability before you sign up for a VoIP and start using its (or VoIP) services.

The below are some of the tips that make potential vulnerability for VoIP.

Spam: VoIP can be affected by its own kind of undesirable marketing known as “Spam over Internet Telephony” (SPIT).

Interruptions: Internet virus can slow down VoIP connection or totally disrupt the service and make you go offline.

Internet and power: VoIP performance depends on Internet and power, consequently if your Internet connection is slow or the power goes down, your VoIP connection will slow down as well.

Voice phishing (or voice vishing): Voice phishing also known as voice vishing is when the attacker contacts you by means of VoIP and tries to get a valuable personal data, such as any information on bank accounts or credit cards.

Hacking. Hacking makes another potential vulnerability for VoIP. Hackers can access your VoIP connection and eavesdrop your conversations, listen to your voicemail, use your VoIP account password to make calls, disable your VoIP system, infest your computer with viruses, or any other undesirable bugs. Moreover, hackers can send you spam in the form of telemarketer calls, or sell your connection information on the black market which is crucially dangerous. In other words, hackers can get into your computer, so they can check out any valuable information you have stored in it.

Privacy loss: If the VoIP connection is unencrypted it is a perfect chance for intruders to eavesdrop on conversations.

Luckily, there is a little probability of spyware as many VoIP service providers have become very conscious about security matters and your VoIP server can’t be hacked easily. Nowadays VoIP providers consider both encryption of data and strong database security. Due to effective precautions against hacking and a great value of VoIP communications, VoIP sustains its position in the market.
